Shrink a heavy PDF file so you can send it by email
Compress a PDF file that is too heavy for email or a system with strict size limits. This tool converts the pages into images at a controlled resolution, offering three compression levels to choose from. The resolution ranges from about 108 DPI on high quality down to 72 DPI on maximum compression. This works very well for scans, presentations, and graphic documents. Please note the tradeoff: the text becomes an image, meaning you can no longer select, copy, or search it, but in return, the file size drops significantly. When finished, you will see the weight before and after, along with the percentage saved. The compression runs entirely in your browser for files up to 40 megabytes, and the file is never uploaded to any server.
For scans and graphic documents, the savings are usually large. For clean text documents, the savings are smaller, and sometimes the file might even get larger because digital text is already very light to begin with.
Because each page is saved as an image at a lower resolution than the original, between 72 and 108 DPI depending on the level. If small letters look smeared, switch to high quality. If a document needs to be printed, it is better not to compress it at all.
The compression works by converting every page into an image, and text inside an image is no longer actual text. If you need to keep the ability to search and copy, it is better not to compress the file or to use the original.
It is recommended to start with balanced. If the file is still too heavy, switch to maximum compression. If the details are important, like in a floor plan or a blueprint, stick to high quality.
No. The entire compression runs in your browser. Because of this, it is perfectly safe to compress a contract, a payslip, or a medical document here.
Klix could not load
Try reloading the page first. If a new version just went out, a reload fixes it straight away.
If reloading did not help, your browser may be too old. Klix runs the tools on your own device rather than on a server, so it needs a browser from 2022 or later. What to do: update Chrome or Firefox, then open klixtools.com again.
